One of the best operas I have seen was Les Miserables ;) it has both depressing, dark and dramatic songs in its score.
Dramatic
At the End of the Day - description of the poor's anger at the Richer upper class's exploitation of the worker and how their life is meaningless.
Do You Hear the People Sing? - Revolutionary song sung as the ABC school boys prepare to fight.
One Day More - My favorite song in the Opera, it is sung the night before the barricade revolution attempt - all cast sing in this one song.
Dark
Dog Eats Dog - An evil pimp/criminal/former innkeeper stealing possessions from dead men when the die during the revolution, his explanation is that the situation in the world is 'Dog eat dog'.
Sad
On My Own - A song of unwanted love and loneliness in a cruel world.
Come To Me (Fantine's Death) -Young death of a mother turned prostitute and her worries for her young child.
Hope this helps TSD :-)
